Super Mikro Optics (SMO)
Modular manufacturing platform for large-aperture spherical microlenses
A standalone, modular machine concept for the manufacture of very small spherical lenses with very large angular apertures. Radius range from ±12 mm down to 0.5 mm – an optics range where conventional CNC machines are increasingly reaching their limits.

Challenge
Very small spherical lenses with large apertures place the highest demands on manufacturing accuracy, machine rigidity, measurement technology, and process stability. In the range of the smallest radii down to 0.5 mm, conventional CNC machines are insufficient to achieve reproducible shape and surface quality.
Solution
A continuous, modular process chain consisting of three coordinated processing machines and an integrated measuring system – from grinding through honing and polishing to final metrological inspection. The core of the concept is the newly developed Dynagrind process: instead of a linear tool movement, the tool pivots continuously around the centre of the sphere of the lens. This principle improves shape accuracy, especially with small radii and large apertures, and ensures reproducible surface quality.
